A Leader is a person who provides direction to other people following him or her or people choose to follow. It is not about the leader and follower relationship. A leader empowers others to become effective leaders themselves and leads others.

Characteristics of dynamic leadership are as follows:

A Dynamic leader is one who possesses the following specialties:

  • A dynamic leader progressively clarifies and refine the leadership policies and philosophies to encourage effective leadership.
  • A dynamic leader contributes towards the mission, vision, and values of an organization.
  • A dynamic leader knows how and when to lead, manage and stand down for the team.
  • A dynamic leader always obtains fresh perspectives with beginner’s mind.
  • A dynamic leader engages other members than just providing instructions to them.
  • A dynamic leader measures the leadership abilities of itself and other members and grows it.

LEADERSHIP STYLES refers to characteristics of the leadership behavior in performing various functions such as directing, motivating, guiding and managing a group of people of an organization. on the basis of different characteristics, Kurt Lewin has provided different models of styles which are as follows:

Authoritarian leadership styles: In this style, a leader provides directions to its follower and make various decisions without the participation of members of an organization, who actually have to follow such decisions. Clear expectations are stated to the employees, what should be done when it should be done, how it is to be done and by whom it is to be done. In this style of leadership, the lines of authority and responsibilities are clearly stated to the members for better performance and control.

Participative leadership style: In this style, leader provides proper guidance to all the members of an organization and allow them to participate in the decision-making process, members feel engaged in organizational processes and motivated towards work and contribute more to achieve higher goals of an organization.

Laissez-faire leadership style: The policy of leader under this style is "let them do". Members of the group demand more from the leader and show little co-operation. The leader provides little guidance to a group of people and provides them independence to show their creativity. This leadership style is appropriate when members of the group are highly qualified experts.

Transformational leadership style refers to the ability of a leader to inspire followers and direct the group towards positive change. Transformational leaders are generally more emotionally intelligent, energetic and passionate towards higher achievements. This leadership style is more productive and provides higher satisfaction to the members.

Transactional leadership style: In this leadership style, the relationship between employer and employee is considered as a transaction, which requires completion of the task from the employee side and monetary compensation from the employer. The roles and responsibilities of each member of the group are clear, they feel motivated towards work and even for the leader, it is easy to supervise.

Situational leadership style: In this style, the major consideration is provided to the environment and situations. It includes two different styles of leadership which are as follows:

Hersey and Blanchard's leadership style includes the following models:

  • Telling style
  • Selling style
  • Participating style
  • Delegating style

Blanchard's SLII leadership style includes the following models:

  • Directing style
  • Coaching style
  • Supporting style
  • Delegating style
