Social Media and Network Security

Home Articles Social Media and Network Security

In the recent times, the socio-economic environment is one of the fastest growing areas of technical infrastructure development on the internet. Over the past few decades, the increasing cyber-attacks are posing a serious threat to the information of users. The main aim of the paper is to investigate the network security issues for the social networking sites as the adoption of social media among businesses and individuals is skyrocketing.  Along with this, the paper aims to provide the background, types as well as the current issues in social media in terms of security threats. Ethical issues related to social networking sites and network security are also discussed. Some of the social implications are also provided in the paper in order to deal with the threats of network and social media.

In today’s scenario, computers and smartphone have changed the idea of communication. However, due to lack of security, a number of cyber crimes have emerged. Here, the cybersecurity plays an important role in the development of services and information technology. It is an attempt by the users in order to protect their personal as well as professional information from the attacks. The main role of network security is to protect the networks and computer programs from unauthorized access. A lot of users are also not aware of the risks of social media and network security which cause cyber-attacks (Das, 2017).

Types of network security, background, and security threats

Network security is considered as the activity which is designed in order to protect the integrity and usability of data. It includes a number of software and hardware technologies. The effective network security is one which manages the access to the overall network and targets various threats to stop them from entering or spreading in the network. There is a number of types of the network security such as the access control, antivirus and antimalware software, application security, behavioural analytics, data loss prevention, firewalls, email security, intrusion prevention, and detection systems, mobile device security, and network segmentation. In addition to these the security information and the event management, virtual private networks, and wireless security are some other types of network security. Along with this, the security threats are also included like misuse of identity. The attacker can impersonate the identity of the user which results in misuse of identity. The content which is uploaded by the user on the social networking sites can be saved at the end of network operator even after the deletion of the data. There are a number of legal issues, the privacy of data, and the concerns related to the misuse of identity included. In addition to these threats, there are also various attacks on the security of the network that poses the use of social media. These attacks include phishing attack, malware, viruses, clickjacking attack etc.

Ethical issues in network security and social media

  1. Ethics and responsible decision making: Anyone should be aware of individual responsibility in the process of ethical decision making which are associated with information
  2. Confidentiality and privacy: People have the rights in order to secure to secure their privacy and protect the individual from damaging information which is stored in the computerized databases.
  3. Liability: In order to protect against liability, there should be consideration of legal aspects of affirmative promise, product description, and product demonstration.
  4. Patent and copyright law: In order to protect computer software from the network security attacks, copyright law is able to provide a significant legal tool.

Social implications

The sites of social networking rely on the communications and connections and also encourage in order to share the personal data and information over the sites. The lack of physical interaction is responsible to provide the false sense of the security. While a majority of the people using social networking sites, there are higher chances of malicious attacks and unauthorized access to data. there is a number of ways in which someone can protect their confidential data from attacks. These include limiting personal information, remembering that the internet is a public resource and installing software to deal with threats.

Social networking sites and social media is one of the growing and fastest using trends. However, there is a number of attacks and the security threats that limit the use of social networking sites and cause a number of issues. there are various types of threats to network security in terms of attacks. These can be mitigating with the use of appropriate security measures as well as following proper ethical issues.
