Task

CQ Air conditioning services (CQAC) perform installation and repair activities of air conditioning units in their customers’ premises. When a new customer requests for an installation, CQAC collects their personal details such as name, address, contact phone, email address, etc., Most of their installations are carried out in the home premises of their customers, however, some customers request them to install the air conditioning units at other premises such as their investment units/houses or offices etc., Hence, they also collect the contact person and address details of the premises where the installation has to be carried out.

Subsequently, one of CQAC employees inspects the premises and provide installation-options to the customer. The current installation-options that they provide are ducted, wall mounted and window mounted air conditioning. Once these options are finalized by the customer, a purchase order/agreement is generated by them and a copy is given to the customer. Currently 40% of the total cost is collected as advance payment from the customers.

After installing the air conditioning units by their employees, CQAC conducts an inspection visit, settles the issues if any and collects the remaining cost of the installation.

Whenever CQAC receives a repair request from their customers, the details that are related to the problem are obtained and a possible date for a repair visit is informed to them. After the completion of the repair work by their employees, an invoice is issued to the customer.

Note: The attributes of the possible entities have not been mentioned clearly. For an example, the wall mounted air conditioning unit has properties such as HP, make and model, etc., You are required to conduct further research and identify the necessary attributes and provide their details (in a data dictionary) for all the entities that you have used in your ER diagram. Please make sure that each entity has at least two relevant attributes. Assignment Requirements

In this assignment, you need to create an Entity Relationship (ER) diagram relevant to the above case study and optionally perform logical design to produce appropriate 3NF Relations.

Draw an appropriate ER diagram

Use the symbols as prescribed in your unit-textbook to draw the ER diagram (ERD) for the above case study. Your ERD must

  • show all necessary entities, attributes and relationships
  • show identifiers/identifying attributes as necessary
  • show multi-valued attributes, if any
  • show participation and cardinality
  • show associative entities, if appropriate
  • show weak entities, if any
  • use the notation described in the set text
  • use consistent and appropriate naming for entities and attributes as specified in the unit text book

Some business rules or other aspects of the case study may not be clear to you when you read the case study. If this is the case, then you should either approach your lecturer or tutor for clarification, or you may simply make an assumption and then develop your ERD accordingly. For example, the case study might not mention all relevant participation information (also called minimum cardinalities). If so, you may make an assumption about what the minimum cardinalities might reasonably be, and then show them in your ERD accordingly. You should justify each assumption in terms of the business, for example: it is assumed that each customer must have at least one order because it is assumed that the business does not record customer details until the customer makes an order with them. To get yourself started, ask yourself, 'If I were running this business, what things I need to keep a list of?' Write those things down. For each thing, what information would you need to record about it? How can it be identified? The answers to these questions will help you to develop your ERD.

Data dictionary

Provide the details of attributes for all the entities. You can use a suitable tabular format to provide these details. The details must include the following properties of attributes wherever appropriate:

  • name
  • size/length
  • minimum and maximum value and/or permitted value
  • required/not required for a new instance
  • brief notes that are relevant

Assumptions and Business rules

  • Provide assumptions and business rules relevant to your ERD.
  • Create Logical Design (Optional):
  • If you would like to perform this optional component of this assignment, you can map your Entity Relationship diagram (ERD) into relations and make sure that all the relations are in 3NF. Provide all the relations in the following format:
  • Customer (CustomerId, CustomerName, Street, Suburb, State, PostCode, Email)
  • Invoice (InvoiceNumber, InvoiceDate, Total, CustomerId)
  • foreign key (CustomerId) references Customer(CustomerId)
