Responsive Web Design

Task

Options to create a website:

  • Static html with CSS and image content
  • Wordpress.com website
  • Self hosted Wordpress.org using own hosting

Submission method:

Upload your website: either static html/css/images OR your WordPress link and screenshots, in a zipped folder named with your ID number on WebLearn. WordPress can be your own self hosted Wordpress or Wordpress.com.

Topic: a non-profit organisation

Your project has to deal with a small scale idea so you can easily focus on the site development and create good content (text, images etc.). If the concept is too ambitious or the subject too broad, you might find yourself wasting time gathering the right information and or you might produce an ineffective campaign.

Your website might promote or introduce new ideas, change the law, help change the world etc. BE CREATIVE and INNOVATIVE.

Get inspired

Take screenshots of web pages you like, analyse why they look appealing and get inspired. Keep a record of all the interesting graphics/websites you come across. Keep a record of all the interesting graphics/websites you come across.

Keep in mind the target audience

Always keep in mind who you are designing the website for. You want to convince, impress or attract a certain type of audience. If you don’t have a precise idea of who you want to attract, your content will lack relevancy and focus.

  • Be creative and innovative but focus on the user experience.
  • Don’t make the user think and don’t confuse them.

Your website must be entirely original. It should be innovative, creative and appropriate to the site objectives and user needs.

The website should be developed and conform to the rules of usability and accessibility and demonstrate full understanding of web design and contemporary best practice with good web standards compliance.

The website should contain a minimum of four distinctive sections or pages, EACH featuring:

  • Logo (brand identity)
  • Menus
  • At least five images
  • Contact details with working email, or contact form

Your website should be innovative, creative and appropriate to the site objectives and user needs. It should be fully responsive.

The website should include:

  • 1. The homepage should contain at least an introduction to the subject with strong visuals or representation of the content.
  • 2. A working email link.
  • 3. An ‘About’ page to give more information about the project, about yourself or about facts and figures.
  • 4. A gallery of images or images used inline
  • 5. A contact form is recommended but not compulsory.

You can design your website using Dreamweaver (or use any other applications producing HTML files) OR create a WordPress website.

Other aspects to consider

  • Attention to Search Engine Optimisation
  • Attention to usability & accessibility
  • Consistency in layout, design, typography, use of colours
  • Custom CSS a bonus
  • Consistency in navigation
  • Integration of dynamic elements
  • Demonstration of awareness of web design trends

Content is as important as Design, Usability and Creativity.
