1 PROJECT BACKGROUND
Project Gigaton is one of the new initiative taken by Walmart to avoid around 1 billion metric tons of greenhouse gases from respective global value chain by 2030. This project is valuable for the suppliers of the organization because this will take their sustainability efforts to the next level. This project was introduced by the organization in year 2017 with strong commitment of suppliers and board members of the organization.
2 COMPATIBILITY OF SELECTED PROJECT WITH THEORETICAL DEFINITION OF PROJECT
“A project is a temporary endeavour undertaken to create a unique product, service or result. This project might involve single individual, single organizational unit and multiple organizational units.” This theoretical definition of project is fully compatible with Walmart project selected here because this project was the direct reflection of initiative taken by the suppliers of the organization in context to meet sustainability goals. The selected project is a group project that was undertaken with the intention to create unique sustainability result.
3 INFLUENCE OF PARENT ORGANIZATION’S STRUCTURE ON THIS PROJECT’S MANAGEMENT
Walmart organization has functional organizational structure according to which the project manager has little or no authority to hold higher business responsibilities. Similar organizational structure is following by the team to manage the completion of initiated Project Gigaton. The budget of undertaken project will handle by the functional manager whereas the project manager & project management administrative staff work as per part-time basis so this might delay the initiated project.
4 ISSUES ASSOCIATED WITH MANAGEMENT OF THIS PROJECT AS A RESULT OF ABOVE ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE
• Lack of required coordination: If the team will work according to functional organizational structure then each group’s task will require no input from other functional groups and the communication will increasingly become dominant in the organizations. While working on any project with the use of functional organizational structure, the need of team cooperation raises.
• Difficult to respond to changes immediately: The personnel in functional organizations grouped as per their roles, responsibilities, skills and knowledge but the level of bureaucracy & business strategies will make it difficult to respond to newly initiated change immediately.
• Weakening common bonds: If the employees have common organizational objective to be achieved then their performance and morale improves significantly but in case, the employees are working on a common project as per functional organization structure then this aspect result in weakening of common bonds.
5 DISCUSSION ON LIFECYCLE OF THIS PROJECT USING “CONCEPTUAL- DEFINITION- EXECUTION” FRAMEWORK
” Conceptual-Definition-Execution” is the framework that is used to complete the initiated project i.e. “Project Gigaton”. Working of initiated project according to this framework is discussed in the following section-
Initiation stage: firstly, the project will be initialized and the project requirements will be documented properly so that these can be cross checked before project completion stage.
Feasibility stage: Feasibility analysis will be performed to evaluate that whether the nominated or undertaken project is feasible to be introduce or not.
Proposal preparation: At the end of conceptual phase, a project proposal will be prepared to make it easy for the team to analyse that what they have to do.
Project definition: The scope and objective of initiated project will be documented in this phase so that it become easy for the team to realize that what they have to do in this project.
System definition: The system or project will be defined in this phase according to different requirements.
User & system requirements: At the end of definition phase, the user & system requirements will be documented related with the project initiated by the suppliers of Walmart organization.
Design stage: The blueprint of initiated project will be designed during this stage so that it become easy for the developers to work on its actual development.
Development stage: The blueprint will be referred in this phase, to work on actual execution of initiated Project Gigaton project.
Testing stage: In this stage, the developed project will be tested for different user & system requirements.
Implementation stage: This is the second last stage of execution phase which include the implementation of testing & improvement modules discussed by the QA.
Termination stage: After this, the tested & implemented project will be delivered to the client.
System improvement: The system improvement related queries will be handled in this phase to meet satisfaction criteria of end users i.e. “community people” of initiated project.
System termination: At last, the developed project will be terminated if it will fulfil all criteria mentioned to be followed.
