Lean Project Management

As companies work of various projects, which include products, development, services or processes etc. In order to this, to manage projects by focusing on continuous improvements of the process, lean project management uses data-driven methods. Mainly lean project management emphasizes quality, data analysis, improved cross-functional team works, increases customer value and elimination of resource waste with efficient use of resources, employees’ time, materials, and other financial resources. This method of project management is effectively used for complex projects which are highly impacted with the limitation of cost and resources. These methods of project management include Lean Six Sigma (DMEDI), Kanban, and Deming Cycle. Lean project management methodology mainly focuses on in-depth planning of eliminating waste, visual documentation tools etc.

Lean Six Sigma (DMEDI)

Six sigma is considered as measurable and structured method which are used to identify the reasons which causes the problems to prevent waste of resources, cost, time or insufficient quality work which are occurring throughout the project. There are five phases by which projects are managed:

  • Define: It defines main objectives of project, purpose and identifies structure and value for customer and company.
  • Measure: Measure the processes of project management and determine how to achieve success in their objectives.
  • Explore: Explore some new innovative ways to complete the project successfully by improving development process in an effective manner.
  • Develop: Develop efficient plans in terms of financial and personnel resource needs in order to organize and implement the project.
  • Implement: Successful implementation of project plan for completion of the project.

There are various types of methodologies which can used for project management and development such as PMBOK, Prince2 and Agile etc.

PMBOK stands for project management body of knowledge which is a robust methodology which can be used for complex and large scale projects. PMBOK suggests that all the control is in the hand of project manager and decision making authority is always in the hand project manager. PMBOK consist of five phase as

Project Initiation

It is the first phase of project life cycle or the initialization of project development. In this phase, project value and feasibility or project requirements are measured. The feasibility is measured typically using to basic evaluation tools such as business case document and feasibility study.

Project Planning

The project planning phase is significant requirement of project management. The planning act as an essential building block in development of project management cycle.  Once the project has assigned with a dedicated team, the team will plan regarding concrete plan which guide the development of project. The team will calculate estimated time and budget required for development of project.

Project Execution

This phase is where the project deployment initialized in the real-world and project plan is followed for the deployment process. The customer satisfaction is the prime goal in this phase. The prime results of the project execution are project deliverables, performance assessment, request changes and update the project management plan.

Project monitoring and control

This phase generally integrated with the execution phase, but it is a necessary phase for project management. The project manager verifies the project management and development. Therefore, the project monitoring and control constant vigilance help the project working smoothly.

Project Closure

This a vital step after the project is completed and delivered to customers, stakeholders are completely satisfied with development and resource utilization is released. The project team is released from the project and complete documentation of the project is made.

 Agile model

Agile model is best suitable and most adopted by the organization in modern-day scenario. The focus of model is on the adaptability and customer satisfaction in specified time. The model is a combination of two models such as incremental and iterative model. The agile model breaks the complete task as incremental method, but execute them in iterative manner. Cross-functional teams are involved in the development lifecycle.

Phase of Agile

The life cycle is stimulated in such phase as planning, requirement analysis, design, coding, unit testing, and acceptance testing. The working principle of agile model involves individuals and interactions modules, working software, customer collaboration and responsive to changes.

Prince2 stands for Projects in controlled environment which is structured certification programme as well as project management and development technique. Prince2 focuses on dividing task into manageable and deliverable phase. Prince2 techniques possibly cover different aspect of project environment phase such as risk assessment, change management, planning, quality assurance, progress building and business cases.

Phase of Prince2

The Prince2 is divided into seven process such as starting up a project, directing, initiating a project information gathering, controlling, managing a product delivery, defining stage boundaries and closing the project.
