Task A: Online discussion

Your tutor will assign you to a small group within which you will have this discussion.  A specific Loop discussion forum will be created for this task which will take place over three weeks.  In addition to making three required posts of approximately 300 words, you should also make as many short posts as you wish to contribute to the ongoing discussion within your group.

Cognitive Development:  Continuity vs. discontinuity

• During this week you will engage in, and contribute to, a discussion, in Loop, on the topic of Do the main theories of cognitive development support a continuity or discontinuity hypothesis?

• Make reference to children’s cognitive development as they grow and develop new skills

• In your posts, you may address some of the following questions:

Is learning an individual or a social process?

Does learning occur in distinct periods or as part of an overall process?

How essential is prior to learning for further learning?

• Read the Guide to Online Communication and Conduct from the Humanities Course Handbook before engaging in any online discussion.

• A specific Loop forum will be created for this discussion. You must make ONE posting (of approximately 300 words) during this week.

Gender Development:  Continuity vs. discontinuity

• During this week you continue to engage in, and contribute to, the discussion, in Loop.

• Make reference to children’s gender development

• In your posts, you may address some of the following questions:

o Do theories of gender development support a continuity or discontinuity hypothesis?

o Does research support the idea of gender constancy?

o When/does gender development begin and end?

• You must make ONE posting (of approximately 300 words) during this week. 

Relational Development:  Continuity vs. discontinuity

• During this week you continue to engage in, and contribute to, the discussion, in Loop.

• Make reference to children’s development within their family and peer group

• In your posts, you may address some of the following questions:

o Do children bring particular styles to relationships, or learn ways of relating from their caregivers during the early years?

o How do children acquire trust?

o Do dynamics in early relationships influence later relationships?

• You must make a further ONE posting (of approximately 300 words) during this week. 

• At the end of this week, prepare and present your THREE discussion postings into a word document. You will submit your three postings with your essay for marking. Please see the Deliverables section below.

• You will be marked on the online work submitted in this dropbox and not on additional posts if you choose to contribute more than three times to the discussion. Therefore, make sure you pick your three favorite posts when submitting your work. If necessary include part of the conversation in which your post was located, making sure that it is clear which post(s) is/are yours, so that the assignment marker can see your post in context, but do not include so much text that the reader gets bogged down.

Task B: Essay

• During these weeks you will complete an individual reflective essay summarizing your position on the topic: Continuity vs. discontinuity:  Do children achieve their milestones through distinct advances or through a series of gradual progressions?

• Your essay should include an analysis and evaluation of the points made.  You may argue a particular position or use this as an opportunity to reconcile issues that have arisen in the online discussion.

• You may draw on resources that have not been used in the online discussion of this topic within the essay.
